Parabens or No Parabens?

Parabens or no Parabens?  That is the question.

In 2004 there was a report published by British cancer researcher Philippa Darbre, Ph.D., that stated parabens were present in malignant breast tumors.  Since then, there has been a worldwide debate about the safety of these preservatives with some countries creating recommended limits in cosmetic products.  On the contrary, this report has been criticized for failing to examine paraben levels in healthy breast tissue therefore leading skeptics to conclude that just because parabens are found in tumors, doesn’t mean they cause them.

I’m not qualified to give you conclusive evidence one way or the other but what I can say is if there is any doubt that it could potentially be harmful to your health – why risk it?

Here’s what you need to know:
Parabens are present in a wide range of beauty products to prevent bacteria growth.  They are in shampoo, lotions, lipsticks, mascara, body wash and more. The most common parabens you will find are butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben.  However, just the prefix (butyl, methyl, propyl) still puts them in the paraben family.  Parabens mimic estrogen which is what researchers believe lead to problems.

The Solution:
Go Paraben Free!  More and more companies are now marketing paraben free products to help put consumers minds at ease.  You can find the same quality products without harmful preservatives. There is an entire section of “natural products” on Sephora’s Website along with a whole host of other brands a quick “Paraban Free Products” google search can provide.

Personal Paraben Free FAV:
I have long been a fan of delicious smelling body lotions so this posed a problem for me since most body lotion scents contained these controversial preservatives. Body lotion in particular, is something that touches almost every part of your body so I felt it was important to make a change.  Having previously been a die hard Laura Mercier Almond Coconut Milk Soufflé Body Crème lover, I was determined to find a brand that was paraben free but still allowed me to smell like a coconut!

Lavanila is an all natural brand that prides itself on the use of organic ingredients.  I decided to test out their “healthy body butter” and was instantly hooked!  There are a handful of difference scents but my personal favorite is Vanilla Cocount. Check out their website.  They have a TON of natural products to offer.

Paraben free AND smelling like a coconut.  Exactly what I asked for! ☺
